Captain Lora with Captain the beagle aboard the Marissa

Capt Lora and Captain, the one actually in charge.

Why we take ten

Dive San Diego on a big boat and you know the feeling. Thirty divers, one swim-step, and a wait to get in the water. All day, you are a name on a manifest, not a diver anyone knows. This boat is the opposite of that, on purpose.

I am Captain Lora. I did not plan on a boat. I was twenty-six and headed to med school when the Marissa landed in my lap, and I chose her instead. The first years, she beat me up. I stayed up all night fixing her with customers coming in the morning. I replaced the engines, the shafts, the steering, every major system, and I took my knocks in the reviews while I learned the parts of this business nobody teaches.

Then an emergency went down on the boat, and the crew never missed a step. Precision and care, top to bottom. That told me more than any easy day could, and it became the standard. Handle the big things flawlessly, own the small ones completely, and build the boat so no diver has to worry about it.

That is why we take ten. The Coast Guard rates the Marissa for 24. We run 10. Ten is the number where your gear gets its own dry bin and its own wet bin, the swim-step is not a line, and the crew knows your name this trip and the next. Fewer divers, more bottom time, more room to work.

Safety comes before the schedule, the convenience, and the revenue, every time. No diver gets rushed and no diver gets judged on this deck, from a first ocean dive since checkout to a rebreather on a deco profile. Plan your dive, dive your plan. And you see the same faces trip after trip. Captain Lora since 2009, Captain Chris since 2015, Captain Rod since 2018, Robin Jacoway as tech dive master since 2009, and the beagles, Captain aboard since 2012 and Scout since 2020. Captain is the one actually in charge.

You've got credibility in handling it when things go south. You've got procedures, for you and your staff, written down, and everyone knows the expectations. No other boat I've been on has that level of standards.
Robin Jacoway, tech dive master

Going on two decades of choosing this boat, every day, so certified divers get a day on the water they can trust. That is why she exists, and it is why I would love to have you aboard.

Show up. Gear up. Drop in.

No mystery, no scramble. Here is how a day on the Marissa runs.

  1. 1

    Arrive and meet the crew

We leave from Mission Bay Sports Center, 1010 Santa Clara Place. Parking is free. Come early, say hi, and meet your core crew. Stow your gear in your own dry and wet bins.

  2. 2

    Tanks and fills, sorted

AL80 tanks (DIN or Yoke) and air fills are included. Nitrox is blended onboard, 22 to 40%, a small add-on for nitrox-certified divers. We are the only San Diego boat that blends it on the water, so there are no off-boat fill runs.

  3. 3

    Splash, with room and time

Big swim-step, easy fin ladder, ten divers instead of thirty. The Yukon, the Ruby E, Lost City kelp, Point Loma, offshore pinnacles, the Coronado Islands, whatever is on that trip's plan.

  4. 4

    Surface, warm up, dive again

Warm packs, hot cocoa, coffee, and tea are waiting. Covered salon to warm up, a full enclosed head with a hot shower, and snack bags with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. No rush to gear up for the next drop.

A fair price and real bottom time

Here is exactly what you get, what it takes, and what to bring, laid out plain, so nothing is a surprise at the dock.

What you get

More bottom time on the sites divers come to San Diego for. The Yukon and the Ruby E, kelp forests, offshore pinnacles, and the Coronado Islands, with room to work and the same core crew every trip.

Picking your day and price

One fixed price per seat, all taxes and fees included, from $199 for a 2-dive local trip up to $375 for a full day at the Coronado Islands. Each listing shows the date, boarding time, number of dives, and the price before you book. Pay in full, or use Affirm or Klarna at checkout.

All you do is show up

Bring your certification and your personal gear, and we handle the rest. Renting? We arrange it through House of Scuba, about $57 to $89 plus a $20 pickup and drop-off.

Captain Lora was able to contact her insurance company to make sure it was okay, so long as I had a clearance letter from my cardiologist. I felt she really went above and beyond.

Real questions, straight answers

How much does a trip cost?+

Prices are per seat and every tax and fee is already in the number. A 2-dive Wreck Alley trip is $199, Point Loma or La Jolla kelp and reef is $209, technical trips are $249, and the full day at the Coronado Islands is $375. Three-dive local days and private charters carry their own price on the card. Every trip card carries its own price. Pay in full, or split it with Affirm or Klarna at checkout. Apple Pay, Link and Amazon Pay work too.

Do I need my own gear?+

Tanks and weights are included, AL80s in DIN or Yoke plus hard and soft weights. You bring your exposure suit, a 7mm wetsuit or a drysuit, because the water runs 50 to 52°F, plus your reg, BCD, computer, fins, and mask. No gear yet? We arrange rentals through House of Scuba, about $57 to $89 plus a $20 pickup and drop-off.

What certification do I need?+

It depends on the site. Many Wreck Alley and kelp sites are Open Water friendly. The HMCS Yukon and the USS Hogan are advanced dives. Technical wrecks need valid technical certification for the equipment and profile you dive. Your card has to be current and match the dive. Not sure a trip fits your cert? Text Capt Lora before you book.

I get seasick, or this is my first boat dive.+

The no-rush policy is built for you. We add time to the day, and the deck is judgement-free. If you have any history of seasickness, take your medication the night before and again about two hours before the trip. Dramamine or Bonine both work, and ginger helps. Covered salon seating, warm packs, and hot drinks do the rest. Tell the crew you are new.

What happens if the weather turns?+

We run every trip we safely can. The Captain checks the NOAA forecast and several local microclimate models and usually makes the call 12 to 24 hours out, by email, so check your inbox the night before. If we cancel for weather or sea conditions, you get a full refund or a free reschedule. Traveling in from out of town? Email Capt Lora 3 to 5 days ahead.

Is this right for a technical diver?+

Yes. Technical and rebreather divers are our signature crowd. We welcome tech, CCR, sidemount, doubles, scooter, and staged, deco, and bailout setups with valid matching certification, and we run tech-cert-only dives a couple times a month. Robin Jacoway has been our tech dive master since 2009. On the wrecks, we drop you on the wreck, not near it. Bring the card for the exact rig and profile you dive.

The Marissa at the surface

Ten seats a trip

Every Marissa trip takes ten divers, no more, and the schedule shows spots left as they go. If a date works, it is yours. If you want to talk it through first, text Capt Lora.
